ABOUT MY WORK
Masai Matthews was born April 2nd, 1997 in Seattle, Washington. He and his two siblings, Ajia, whose life was cut short at the age of 13 in 2009, and his brother Casai were raised by their single mother, Kai Robinson.
In 2017, Masai began to pursue filmmaking seriously at the age of 19. He went to Central Washington University with the intent to study pre-dentistry. He then changed his focus to early education. Masai quickly realized he did not want a career in anything he was studying at the university so he took some time off of school before making the decision to go to film school. Initially, Masai’s career started off from wanting to be an actor. He stated “as bad as this might sound, I decided to start filmmaking because I didn't want to waste time going to auditions knowing I might not get a role so my original plan was to create my own short films and stories to act in.” He then fell in love with being behind the camera and the creative process more than being in front of the camera. He also felt more comfortable behind the camera.
Masai’s main focus in filmmaking is Directing and Cinematography. He also plans to grow his production company, SaiMatt Picture, LLC with hopes of one day becoming a major production company in the industry.
Masai started SaiMatt Pictures in 2017 as an aspiring film company when he produced his first short film, displaying it on YouTube. Since then, he has released several videos and short films through SaiMatt Pictures. While working independently, he took the initiative to refine his skills by attending the Seattle Film Institute. As a result, in 2020 Masai graduated and took SaiMatt Pictures to the next degree by establishing an LLC, turning SaiMatt Pictures into an actual business.
